six months is a long time.

There's a new website being built almost done.

A new short being finished - almost done.

A new feature draft in development - on the third pass - not almost done.

A new short written and shortlisted for something I really hope my producer gets.

My new producer is awesome. really. we are pals.

Atlantic Film Festival...It's been a year already??

Wow

lots has happened since the first post.

Some great news all around.

The Scavengers - still making it's way around the world . Some great screenings at Fantasia in Montreal, the Hollywood Black Film Festival and On the way overseas again. Hopefully soon, it will be available by a simple click of the mouse if all goes through.

Congrats to the crew from YER DEAD, who are plugging away on the Hobo With A Shotgun script. This feature will change genre film crossovers in this country, no doubt.

The Atlantic Film Festival was great this year, with in incredible showing of emerging and young filmmakers in the region. It was impressive, with over 8 shorts programs dedicated to just this region!

The Transfiction camp came out with some pretty unexpected awards:

The Joy Post award was awarded for the next Transfiction production - Righteous.

a very different film from the Scavengers, but one that we are excited about

more on that soon.

Thank you so much to the Jury and Joy society for backing it, we promise we won't disappoint.

I met Justin Simms again. He's just really cool all around, and I admire his work so much.

the inspired script award was award to TWO emerging writers. Two! how cool is that?

there's so much happening this way that it's almost to good to be true.

The awarded scripts were Atmospheric Disturbance - a xenophobic horror film. Based on the events of Welles' famous War of the World hoax, by Jeremy Hull.

Jeremy is a new and fierce writer here, and people had to take notice of him. He crashed the festival with everything he had, and left with a full city sized telephone book - that was gladly signed by everyone.

the other script was my own "Cracker Factory" - a racial satire.

we plan to follow through with these and we are making sure these projects get made.

A review in Boston

we got some nice words for our film by Mike Everleth from Badlit.

The Scavengers, dir. Cory Bowles. A trio of young boys find a dead body in a remote wooded area. Sounds like Stand By Me, right? Wrong, especially since the body here is that of a mermaid and the boys spend an afternoon poking, prodding and desecrating the body the way only young, curious lads can. Still it’s an oddly touching story about peer pressure and growing up. The trio is split among the typical dividing lines: The aggressive kid who tricks the weakest into the most difficult situations while the passive middle kid just casually observes without getting involved. Plus, the corpse/mermaid make-up effect is disturbingly convincing.

Since you've been Gone...Boston Underground Film Festival, San Diego Black Film Festival , Reel 2 Real Festival For Youth, and The Dam Short FIlm

wow. Long time since the last check in but lots has gone on and still kicking. THE SCAVENGERS has played at many more screenings and the response has been great.
We got to attend The Boston Underground Film Festival where 4 count em, 4 films from Halifax played. That would be alongside TREEVENGE, LOST AND FOUND and the wonderfully offensive BLOODSHED. The hospitality was great and we were fortunate enough to screen our short before DEAD GIRL, a film we were stoked to show with. the movie is amazing.

Before that we got To show in Vancouver for the Reel 2 Real International Film Festival, Nevada for The Dam Short Film Festival, and San diego Black Film Festival.

The Halifax International Viewfinder's Festival of Youth this April.

Viewfinders and Festival In a Van

So in the last month, I've been having a great time traveling with AFF's Festival in a Van and recruiting for Viewfinders.
As well as facilitating workshops for all ages, we've also been showing The Scavengers to HIgh School students.
what a response!
THe performances by the kids in the film get a great reaction, especially from other youth.
It is a pretty good sign that we do tend to take young performers for granted and, when given enough freedom have the instincts and the creativity to make very strong choices and great performances.

it's funny thing about working with kids. I've done it for so long, and find myself in situations more times than none where youth will play a large part in something creative that I am involved in. You always learn very much about yourself, probably more than they do about what they are doing.

It's a pretty great and humbling thing.

Whitney...as chessy as it was.. you were very correct. teach them well and let them lead the way.

This is a great week for everyone involved in The Scavengers.

we Have our US Premiere as part of the Grey Matter Shorts program 

at The Hamptons International Film Festival in NY

the program is stacked with some pretty amazing shorts that have already been getting excellent reviews.

We're excited to be among them

A Win at Home

The Scavengers recently picked up the Kodak Red Clay Award for Best Maritime Short at The Prince Edward Island International Film Festival.

It was a stellar surprise, and definitely gave a nice boost after some other successful screenings around Atlantic Canada.

We really want to thank the Island for having us, and we hope to give them something else next year!

We also had some great screenings in Montreal and Sudbury as well.

THE SCAVENGERS

The Scavengers is the first story produced by Halifax's Transfiction Films.

Written and directed by choreographer/actor and Cory Bowles, the film is a short story about three young boys that find the body of a mermaid in a less travelled cove. The result is a series of events that blends humor and violence in a unique study of children and nature.

The story was the result of a stellar pool of talent, both established and new on the scene, and features a score by Toni Pigot, Adam Burke, and Rebekah Higgs.

John Davies and Cory Bowles are co-producers of The Scavengers, and are the creaters of Transfiction.

Davies, who recently made headlines for writing the Grindhouse winning trailer, Hobo with a Shotgun, started Transfiction with Bowles, with the goals to create new stories, travel well outside the box, and challenge their own imaginations.
